About Piraeus

Piraeus is surrounded by sea and the rhythm of its life is affected by it. In ancient times it was an island and travelers traveled from the hinterland (the verb was: it was being transported). From there, rather, he received his name. The urbanization of the city was carried out by the architect Hippodamos, in the middle of the 5th century. B.C. Hippodamos’ plans were used as guidelines for the city’s reconstruction in 1834.

The Themistocles was the first to realize the importance of the city of Athens and made them the main port, replacing the Gulf of Faliro, which was used by the Athenians until the 5th century. B.C. Desiring the existence of a fortified harbor for the city of Athens, from 493 to 479 BC. built the Piraeus wall. Later, Pericles completed the fortification, building the Long Walls, which protected both sides of the road, all the way from Piraeus to Athens. In the Middle Ages, Piraeus was known as Porto Leone, a name given by a huge lion of stone, guarding the entrance of the harbor. Today, it is the main port of Athens, the largest in Greece and one of the most important in the Mediterranean, an important shipping, industrial and transport center in the country. Life in the city focuses on its three ports: the central, Marina Zea and the Mikrolimano.

What can you see?

Central harbor. Its ancient name was Kantharos and today it is the center of city life. From here you will take the ferry to all Aegean islands (except the Sporades) and Crete. You can walk around to see both passenger and merchant ships, as well as the constant arrivals and departures of goods and people from all over the world. In the area of Freatida rescues parts of the ancient Piraeus Wall (in the seaside zone).

Marina Zea (Pasalimani). In this marina anchor some of the most impressive yachts and cruise ships. The coast is full of restaurants, taverns, bars and shops for the needs of passengers. There you will find the Archaeological Museum as well as the Ancient Theater of Zeus (4th – 3rd century BC).

Microlimus . This harbor was protected by the goddess Munihia Artemis, and today it is a popular spot where people from all over Attica gather. It is a beautiful harbor full of fishing boats, small boats and luxurious yachts. If you like fish and seafood, try one of its famous taverns.

Kastella . Stylish and popular district of Piraeus, built on a hill known as Prophet Elias. If you walk to the top of the hill you will find alleys with picturesque houses. From there, the view of the main harbor, Zea and Mikrolimanou is unique. In the area, there is also the outdoor theater “Veacheo”, which hosts important cultural events in the summer.

Municipal Theater . It dominates one of the central squares of the city (Korai Square). It was built in the 1880s in neoclassical style by the architect I. Lazarimos and is one of the most crowded places and a common meeting point for the residents of Piraeus.

ISAP station. (metro station “Piraeus”). This majestic eclectic building with the arched dome (1929) has strong influences from the respective European stations of the period. Recently, the interior equipment has been completely renovated, while the walls host paintings of the students of the School of Fine Arts.

Archaeological Museum . It includes mainly sculptures discovered in Piraeus and the Attica coasts. The exhibits describe the history, the acne and the decline of the ancient city. Pay special attention to the five bronze statues discovered in Piraeus in 1959: the Archaic Kouro-Apollo, the two statues of Artemis, Athena of Piraeus and a mask of ancient tragedy (4th century BC).

Naval Museum . You will find it at Akti Moutsopoulou and its exhibits cover about 3,000 years of Greek naval history.
