The Municipality of Pilea – Hortiatis is a suburban municipality of the city of Thessaloniki with urban, mountainous and marine scenery. It stretches from Mount Chortiatis to the Thermaic Gulf. It features areas of exceptional natural beauty and a long-lasting coastal zone. Its geographical boundaries include large wooded areas, mountain paths and parks that are the main natural environment and the green lung of Thessaloniki. The population of the municipality exceeds 100,000 inhabitants.
It is a charcoal municipality that emerged from the merger of the former municipalities of Panorama, Pilea and Chortiatis. At its limit, 70,210 inhabitants live on the basis of the latest census of 2011. Its total area is approximately 155,800 acres, corresponding to 4,29% of the area of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki. Its territorial morphology consists mainly of mountainous areas with a strong natural relief with the highest altitude being recorded on Mount Chortiatis (1,201m), while it has fewer plains and seaside areas. At the foot of Chortiatis is the homonymous settlement, which is the historical seat of the Municipality as a token of honor in the Holocaust of the settlement in 1944 by the German occupiers during which 149 innocent citizens were executed. Chortiatis belongs to the Network of Martyr’s Cities in Greece.
The main productive sector of the Municipality is the tertiary one, which gathers more than half of its actively employed inhabitants. Within the boundaries of the Municipality, large multinational corporations, public institutions, large public hospitals, private clinics and medical centers, the largest shopping centers in Northern Greece, international hotels, and many remarkable businesses of every commercial object have their headquarters and commercial facilities. It is also worth mentioning the significant presence of the Technological Park, which hosts a large number of new technologies and information technology enterprises in the prefecture of Thessaloniki, as well as the operation of the National Center for Research and Technological Development, focusing on technological research and development of applications and products for industrial and social exploitation.
