The Soufli is located northeast of Alexandroupolis, approximately 70 km and 50 km southwest of Orestiada. The city center is 500 meters from the River Evros.
It is mainly known for its silk industry developed there in the 19 the century.
It is built on the eastern side of the hill of Prophet Elias, one of the last hills of the Rodopi mountain range. Soufli is mentioned for the first time by the Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi in 1667. At that time he was a tax-free village. The Turkish name Sofoulou reveals that it was probably a possession of a monastic order that is actually testified in the area.
Later on, families of Soufliotes fled to Soufli and their fatherly names are mentioned in today’s names. It is, however, historically assured that Soufli was inhabited since the Neolithic Age.
This is evidenced by objects found in the area, as well as the discovery of graves of the Hellenistic Period. The strong Thracian element in the customs of the region testifies the origin of the Soufliotes from the great Thracian sex of the Balkan peninsula and the islands of the northeastern Aegean.
The Municipality of Soufli was the entire municipality before joining the Kallikratis program. It occupies an area of 462.044 acres and has a (real) population of 7,519 inhabitants. Soufli is also the seat of the municipality. It consists of 3 Municipalities, which correspond to the three abolished municipalities. Each municipal unit is divided into communities, which correspond to the departments of abolished Local Authorities.
Municipality of Soufli, Municipality of Orpheus, Municipality of Tycherou.
