To the north of the regional unit of Evros, in a 98km distance from Alexandroupolis, is located the town of Didymoticho which has a population of 8.799 inhabitants. This city is a real museum itself, since it combines natural beauty, monuments and a long history that has stayed alive through the ages and is rooted in the Neolithic period.  Here, the Roman Emperor Trajan, founded in the 2nd century AC , the town ‘Plotinopolis’, in honor of his wife Plotina.  Didymoticho seems to have acquired its modern name due to two castles that existed there in opposites hills.  Since then, Didymoticho has played a dominant role in the Thracian region and has repeatedly been the capital of Byzantine Empire.  The town is crossed by a tributary of Evros, Erythropotamos (red river) and cobblestone paths beautify the traditional mansions.  Here the well-preserved castle of Kale stands proud on the homonym hill, the fortification of which began by Emperor Trajan and was strengthened in the 8th century by engineers of the Emperor of Byzantium, Justinian.  In the castle’s interior is built the chapel of Agios Dimitrios. The shire of Sultan Bayezid “the Thunderbolt”, dated from the late 14th century is found in the area and is the most ancient shire in Europe. On the slopes of Mount Kale, tens of caves are located, in one of which King Charles XII of Sweden was imprisoned. During your stay at Didymoticho, it is worth dedicating some time to visit the Turkish Spa or the Spa of the Whispers, the mausoleum of ‘Oruc Pasha’ as well as the 13th century Byzantine castle of Pythion. – Copyright © wondergreece.gr
