In the 18th century, Portaria has already evolved into an important commercial and craft center of the region, knowing its great growth, which is reflected in its large mansions, many of which have been preserved to this day.
Portaria at that time was famous for its silk woven fabrics and scarves, as well as for its great bazaar, which was probably the most important of Thessaly. Portaria was one of the main centers of the Thessalian revolutionof 1878. With the liberation of Thessaly in 1881, it forms part of the Greek state and is the seat of the municipality of Ormini. Portaria is today a place of special natural beauty, along with its neighboring Makrinitsa, as well as a traditional settlement.
