The Municipality of Igoumenitsa is located on the coasts of Epirus and is the largest municipality of the EE. Thesprotia, with the capital Igoumenitsa. It was established in 2011 (“Kallikratis” Program, 87 A- 07.06.2010), after a merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Igoumenitsa, Margaritio, Parapotamos, Sivota and the Community of Perdika and has a population of 25,814 inhabitants (census 2011). It borders with the Municipalities of Filiates and the Municipalities of Souli, together with which it constitutes the EE. The Municipality of Igoumenitsa, whose population has grown by 17.4% over the last decade (Greek Statistical Authority), is emerging in the western gate of the country and a development center with interregional and transnational role. The construction of Neo Limenas, which currently occupies the second position between the ports of the Greek Territory in passenger traffic and the construction of the Egnatia Motorway, the road linking the Municipality of Igoumenitsa with Ioannina, but also with Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis has brought an end to the isolation of the area.
It is worth mentioning that in the Municipality of Igoumenitsa there is an annex of TEI. Of Epirus and the School of Administration & Economics with a department (Business Administration) and an archaeological museum with exhibits from the Historic Period to the Byzantines. Finally, the possibility of easy access to the beautiful beaches of Sivota, Perdika, Drepano and Makrigialou makes the Igoumenitsa Municipality attracting many visitors.
