The Evzones are village Paionia of Kilkis province of Kilkis , text on the east bank of Axios , very close to the border of Greece – FYROM . The village is also called “Gate of Greece” as it is located on Highway 1 ( European Route 75 ) from the border to Athens . Next to the village operates the border station of Evzones.
The inhabitants of the Evzones are Macedonian locals and refugees from Vogdanza , Griscista , Ghegheli and Stromnitsa (now located in FYROM). There are also many refugees from Pontos . The Pontian refugees came from Sukhumi the Black Sea (today Georgia ). Their origin was from Kerasounta , Kars , Mertinik , Kiole and Ardahan . They settled in the village after a six-month stay in Karabournaki, Thessaloniki. The oldest name of the village was Matsikovo or Matsukovo and comes from a Turk Turk (Matsuk), adding a Slavic suffix
