Just a short distance from Thessaloniki, towards the national road Thessaloniki – Kavala, the sign bearing the name Oreokastro brings us out of the bustling national. Following the road to our left, we head towards the Municipality of Oreokastro.

Our journey begins to change. The forest of cars is replaced by the woods forming the trees, in a small area of 5,000 acres. As we go up the hill, where the administrative center of Oreokastro is located, the green lung is thickening for the region, as well as the whole of the urban complex for the wider Thessaloniki.

A place of unique natural beauty, gifted with green and excellent climate, Oreokastro attracts thousands of citizens every year for permanent settlement. This is also due to the significant infrastructure, recreation and improvement of quality of life, which are implemented daily by the relevant municipal authority.

The Municipality of Oreokastro since 1995 constitutes the administrative transformation and continuation of the old Oreokastro Community, which was established under the name of Dauat Bali on 30 June 1926 (FEK). With new Gov. On October 4, 1926, the Dauat-Bali community was renamed Oreokastro. The same federal office is also called the Ak-Bunar settlement in Aspropyrisi.

In an amphitheatrical location with an average altitude of 250m. and at a distance of 12 km from the center of Thessaloniki, the Municipality of Oreokastro includes within its administrative boundaries the settlements of Oreokastro, Paleokastra, Galini, Asprovrisi, Pefki, Paradisos, Filothei and Amfithea. The seat of the Municipality is located in the settlement of Oreokastro where it is the largest.

Oreokastro is a municipality with rapid population and housing development, which, with the care of the local Municipal Authority, is carried out in terms of quality and absolute respect for man and the environment. It is indicative that in only a decade the population of Oreokastro more than doubled and out of the 5,500 inhabitants numbered by the municipality, in the 2001 census it reached 12,000 inhabitants. In any case, the actual population of Oreokastro is estimated to be over 30,000 today. Apart from the population, on the other hand, the area of Oreokastro is more than doubled, as with the new General Urban Plan, which is still a conquest of the Municipal Authority guaranteeing local development, an area of 4,217 acres was included in the city plan.

Evidence that the site was inhabited since ancient times is the various archaeological finds found in the area occupied by the Municipality of Oreokastro as the Iron Age Cemetery in Palaiokastro, Villa Rustica, the Byzantine Watermills in the Agia Paraskevi Stream. In the modern times in Oreokastro were inhabited by wolves and locals, and during the period 1922 – 1930, Greek refugees from the Pontus and Caucasus settled in the region. The place name “Oreokastro” was given by the Greek refugees in memory of the Beautiful Castle that existed in the Pontos, between the village Hats and Agios Fokas. The name of the settlement during the Ottoman domination was Daut-Balis (now Palaiokastro) meaning “The honey of David”.

Having made a progress, Oreokastro is today a modern and dynamic city that provides almost all services to its residents and visitors. In addition to the well-organized basic infrastructure, Oreokastro has the following facilities: administration (City Hall, KEP, Public Services), education, sports (mass sports programs, child and sea program, “Baths in the Third Age” program, “Kondoxopoulos” “, Olympic Swimming Pool, Football Stadium, Tennis Courts, 5×5 Fields, Open Basketball Fields), Social Policy (Municipal Bank of Blood, Social Care Unit, KAPI, Job Search Office s, Parent School Support Program for new parents, first aid courses, Polyclinic IKA) (active cultural organization, art groups, theater group, philharmonic orchestra, folklore museum – under construction, multipurpose cultural and sports center – under creation), as well as a number of medical and credit institutions as well as hotel groups.
