About Thessaloniki port
The port of Thessaloniki for more than 2300 years, since its establishment in 315/6 BC until today, is the most important port of Macedonia and one of the most important ports in southeastern Europe. Due to its advantageous geographic location and its excellent road and rail connections, it is the largest transit port in the country and serves the needs of some 15 million people in its international hinterland.
It is located at the very heart of the Thermaic Gulf, in the northern part of the eastern Mediterranean, west of the city center of Thessaloniki. The approach of ships is done with a natural channel of deep depth which does not need dredging. It occupies an area of 1.5 million m2 and extends over 3.5 kilometers.
Its facilities include six berths, 6200-yard platforms with a draft of up to 12 meters in front of the sea, and enclosed and open storage areas of 600,000 square meters, suitable for all types of cargo and for passenger service. It also has facilities for the transportation of liquid fuels and is connected to the cross-border liquid fuel transportation pipeline, and is close to the international natural gas pipeline.
Due to its temperate climate, well-protected weather conditions, the existence of a 1,000-meter breakwater that protects the southern winds, the almost zero tide (maximum height of 0,7 m) and the safe harbor installations, cargo loading and unloading disembarking / boarding of passengers on board shall be carried out seamlessly throughout the year.
Part of the port is the Free Zone (type I control: fence, customs control of goods at revenue and exit points, control of persons and vehicles) of the port of Thessaloniki, which since 1995 operates under the Community Customs Code. It has a dense road network that connects directly, bypassing the city, with the national and international road network. All the quays of the port have double / triple railway lines and are connected to the national and international rail network.
It is located at the intersection of major land transport networks, East-West ( Egnatia Odos ) and South-North ( PATHE: Patra-Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzoni or Eidomeni ), which continues to the north on the east- east Mediterranean corridor, Transmission network ( TEN-T Core network corridor Orient – East Med) , also as a pan-lane Ten X .
It has been designated as a port of international interest in the port system of the country ( Government Gazette 202B / 16.2.07) and one of the five Greek ports belonging to the Trans-European Transport Network’s Main Network.
