About Ouranoupolis

Over 1,000 residents live on the doorstep of Athos and in the shadow of the thrilling Tower of Prosforion . Ouranoupoli can be the last cosmic place to reach the visitor who intends to visit Mount Athos, but its name does not owe it to the fact that it is the gateway to the monastic state.

It was named after the Alexandrian city founded in 315 BC by Alexarchos, the son of Antipatros and the brother of Cassander. This city was built on the ruins of Sani , a colony of the Andreeas, which was destroyed by the foundations of Philip II. Its so-called coins bear the inscription “Urban Destiny” and other “Urban Destinations” and a show of Urania Aphrodite, sitting in a sphere on one side and on the other in the sun radiating with eight rays.

In summer, dozens of accommodations are filled with visitors, as do the surrounding beaches. Most visitors also visit the islet of Ammouliani and Drenia . Nobody misses the famous Zygos monastery just 2 km from Ouranoupoli, which is easily and pleasantly covered on foot. The archaeological site is well organized and the visit to the natural border with the monastic community of Athos is an experience that you should not miss.

From the small harbor of the Prophet’s tower, the boats that take the pilgrims (after having been supplied by the pilgrim’s office with the Memorial, that is, the relevant permit) start to reach the seashore of Mount Athos, Daphni.

HISTORICAL DATA FOR THE AREA

The first monasteries were founded in the 10th century on Mount Athos. One of them was the monastery of Zygou, or Frangokastro, in which the Athos Athanasios Athonite, the founder of the monastery of Megisti Lavra , practiced for about a year . This monastery, which has been restored in recent years, has the great privilege of being the only one outside Mount Athos and therefore accessible by women.

At the beginning of the 14th century, the tower of Vatopedi was built by the Byzantine tower, which dominates the southwest corner of the village, in order to protect the hacienda. It is the largest and best preserved in Halkidiki. In the 19th century, after an earthquake, its last roof was shattered. Then it was repaired and took its final form. At the same time his accompanying buildings were built.

After the Asia Minor catastrophe, refugees from the islands of Marmara in Propontida gathered in this area by finding a roof in the tower, its nearby buildings and tents. In 1926 the first houses of the village were built by a German company, some of which are still preserved. Later the inhabitants built the church, the school and began to organize a community called “Prosforion”, then “Pyrgos” and around 1960 took its definitive name as “Ouranopolis”.

In 1928, the Loch pair settled in the tower was connected with the village life . The collaboration of the couple, using patterns copied from monastic codes, with women from refugee families who already knew the art of weaving, laid the foundations of a local craft.
