About Arnaia
Arnaia is one of the most beautiful mountain settlements in Halkidiki with a population of 2,300 inhabitants (Inventory 2011 – Government Gazette 3465 issue Β / 28-12-2012). It is built at the foot of Mount Holomontas at an altitude of 600 m. It is about 70 km from Thessaloniki and 38 km from Polygyros. It crosses the national road 16 (Thessaloniki-Ierissos) leading to Agios Oros. It is the seat of the Holy Metropolis of Ierissos, Mount Athos and Mount Athos.
The settlement is built amphitheatrically in a lush landscape with rich forests and abundant running waters. Its permanent inhabitants deal with logging, livestock, beekeeping, but also with arts, science and commerce. Arnaia maintains even today examples of an old local society in terms of its urban and architectural character. The settlement did not develop on an organized pre-existing web. It is old, has no urban plan and is densely built. According to the tradition, the inhabitants who returned to the city after its destruction by the Turks began rebuilding the settlement around the squares. The houses are very close to each other and without courtyards to protect themselves from the wind and keep them warm during the winter.
There are no free spaces in the building web. There are narrow, cobbled streets and squares that make up an attractive combination of the beauty of the surrounding area and the tradition. The core of the settlement is the central square, the “bazaar”, where there is a large plane tree through which drinking water flows. Around the square and the main street, where public services, banks, shops and restaurants with traditional cafes and taverns are concentrated, the Arnea shopping center is being developed.
