About Vergina

The town of Vergina, 75km west of Thessaloniki and only 12km away from Veria, hosts one of the most important museums in the Greek area with a unique history and rich heritage. Its dark, imposing atmosphere impresses most visitors.

Some of the most distinct and impressive finds from the Macedonian Hegemony that characterizes Greek history are displayed in a very clever way at the site of the original excavations! The museum was built in 1993, about 16 years after the discovery of the Royal Tombs in Aigai .

It has been created in such a way and that it provides the right conditions with controlled humidity and temperature that is necessary for all the valuable finds in order to be properly preserved and protected. Within the museum there are four tombs and the “Heron”, a small temple dedicated to King Phillip II of the Macedonians .

Macedonian treasures and precious exhibits
The museum exhibits hundreds of unique objects including elaborate golden creations, luxurious jewelery, colorful frescoes and mosaics, and hundreds of other ancient items, such as an extraordinarily rich carved bed of funerary character used by the Royal Family.

Some of the most impressive exhibits that certainly stand out are the shield and armor of Philip II and the famous golden shrine that was found in his grave. Richly decorated with flowers, the petals of which are filled with light blue glass and herbal jewels marked by the golden surface, its main feature is a large sixteenth-century star on its surface. An impressive golden wreath consisting of 313 golden leaves and enchanting with its amazing detail was found within Larnaca.

Another exhibit that provokes admiration even today due to its size is the miniature carefully carved figures of various figures of ivory. In addition to the incredible detail that distinguishes them, the gold leaf artwork in many of them greatly improves their aesthetics. The section is dedicated to the memory of Professor Manolis Andronikos , the man who brought to light all these treasures and offered considerable help in their recognition, preservation and rehabilitation.

All these impressive finds accompanied by many others such as the well-known “Crater of Dervene” exhibited at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki are some of the most beautiful and detailed examples of the high level of specialization we find in Ancient Greek Art and Jewelery. The opportunity to admire all these masterpieces is an experience that must not be lost!

The beautiful town of Vergina despite its size offers the visitor some basic amenities necessary for every occasion. You will easily find cafes and beautiful traditional tavernas to enjoy your meal or your drink while the local hotels offer the basic amenities at very good prices for those who choose to stay longer than one day. It is highly recommended for museum friends and not only.
