With a crossroads of sea and land roads – Alexandroupolis joins Europe and Asia, the West and the East. The beautiful seaside town, with the beacon standing imposing in the harbor, is a privileged center of a truly charismatic area.

Another great reason to visit Alexandroupolis is this excellent museum, housed in a stone neoclassical building dating back to 1899. It has been operating for many years organizing educational programs, publications, production of videos and documentaries and has a basic purpose: The acquaintance of the visitor with the folk culture and customs of Thrace . The subject covers the social and economic life of the area from the 18th century to the 1970s. The thematic units in which the exhibits are presented concern clothing, customs in the worship circle, pre-industrial diet and pastry, traditional crops. They also include scrubber and dyeing facilities.

No one could claim that Evros is another river. Besides being a natural border between Greece and Turkey and Greece-Bulgaria, its course has always determined the fate of the country. The Ancients considered it the largest river of the then known world, although it is only the longest on the Balkan Peninsula.

Nearly 30 km before the estuary, the River Evros is divided into two forming a huge long triangle. The deltaic plain created has a total area of 200,000 acres which is shared by Greece (150,000) and Turkey. The 80,000 acres of those found on Greek soil are the land which has been included in the international Ramsar Convention. The official name of the Evros Delta is “Anesio Delta”.
