Using a taxi transfer to Agios Mamas and the village of Agios Mamas can transform your holidays to a great memory
Agios Mamas is a large settlement in the Municipality of Moudania in the prefecture of Halkidiki. Its distance from Thessaloniki is 70 km. In the “Tomb” of Agios Mamas the archaeological excavation brought to light finds, according to which the area was inhabited since 5000 BC. The village refers to documents of Mount Athos in the 11th century. In the 15th century it was subjugated to the Turks. During the Revolution of 1821 the village was destroyed by the Turks and the region was the Battle of the Elves. The inhabitants of Agios Mamas participated in the revolution of 1821. The old village was built by archaeologist Pasha Michael Bey from Serres, who had adorned his yard with ancient findings from the archaeological sites of Halkidiki.
Who was Saint Mamas?
Saint Mamas was born in Gangra in Paphlagonia in 260 AD, from Christian parents, Theodotus and Rufina when they were in prison where they died praying. Thus, Mamas, still an infant, remained orphaned. But a wealthy Christian woman, Amnia, adopted and nurtured him with native affection and according to the spirit of the Gospel. Because he called his stepfather mother constantly a mother, (ie, mom), he was called Mamas. (In another version his name was given because while he did not speak the first word he said was: Mom)
When he was 15 years old, he was caught by pagans because, without fear, publicly, he confessed Christ. Then they hit him badly. They hung in the neck of the lead weft and threw him into the sea. But by the power of God he was saved. Then they reunited him and threw him into a lit furnace and then feeding on the beasts. But because of them they were miraculously saved, they pierced their belly with tridens. And so he martyred and gloriously departed from this life.
