About Nea Roda

The Nea Roda is a coastal village of Halkidiki . It is considered the largest refugee settlement in northern Halkidiki. In 2001, it had 1,148 inhabitants and it is the seat of the municipal district that belongs to the Municipality of Aristotle . In the summer, its population is multiplying.

It is located at the narrowest point of the peninsula of Athos and is washed by the sea from two sides. The main occupation of the village inhabitants is agriculture, fishing and tourism. It is 6 kilometers from Ierissos . The main temple is the temple of Theotokos and Ag. Nicholas, in which there is a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, which was transferred from the first inhabitants, refugees from the Alonis Watchtower, the Sea of Marmara. The chapel of Aghioi Theodoroi overlooks the harbor and Saint Modestos in the meadows.

Many characterize Nea Roda as the largest settlement of refugees who arrived in northern Halkidiki after the Asia Minor disaster. Its name also indicates the origin of the inhabitants: the Prophet’s Rose. Approximately 40 families decided to settle, after many wanderings, at the site of “Prolaka” (which means before the grove, that is, before the Xerxes Canal ) in the summer of 1923.

During the early years at the narrowest point of the Athona peninsula, the residents of Nea Roda were mainly engaged in agriculture and fishing. Nowadays, thanks to the beautiful beaches, the area has been developed in tourism. More than 1,200 people stay here all year round and, of course, much more is done in the summer months. The small distance from Ierissos (6 km) helps to accelerate the development of the area and the tourist infrastructure is excellent.
